Texting has become extremely popular within the last few years. With such a high percentage of people texting every year comes a high probability of people texting while driving. This is turning into a serious problem.
Texting has proven to be a distraction because it requires mental and physical attention, which takes away drivers’ attention from focusing on the road. As a result, more than 20 states have banned texting while driving.
Is Texting While Driving More Fatal Than DUI?
Is texting while driving more dangerous than drunk driving? Some people in the automotive industry believe that there is enough research to prove that texting is indeed more dangerous than drunk driving.
A driving test was conducted with a car and driver to find out whether texting while driving was actually more dangerous than drunk driving. The first part of the experiment was to look at the reaction times of both drivers while they were driving sober and with no distractions. They were also reading and sending text messages on their cell phones as well.
The experiment revealed that both drivers had a longer response time while reading and sending the text messages as opposed to driving without any distractions.
Next, the drivers consumed alcohol and then drove. After doing the experiment again while being drunk, the response times for both drivers were better when the drivers were drunk compared to when they were texting. Slow response times as a result of texting could lead to deadly consequences in the real world.
The Transport Research Laboratory in London also conducted an experiment. They found that drivers who were texting had slower response times and were more likely to swerve in and out of lanes. They were generally seen as worse drivers compared to people who drive while high on drugs.
What the Studies Reveal?
The study also showed that drivers who drove drunk were only 12 percent worse than the safe drivers, compared to 35 percent worse for those who drove while texting. The consensus from the test was that texting while driving is worse than being drunk.
